Chapter 14

“I’m not finished,” Mr. Drennan snapped.

“Thank you for your input,” a balding man with graying temples said. He moved a few papers in front of him, studied one briefly, and looked up. The nameplate in front of him read Wyatt Kimbrell.

“So you must be Mr. Passero, I assume?” he said.

“Excuse me, Mr. Chairman!” Mr. Drennan said. He was livid.

I had never seen him so angry before. I didn’t like where this was going.

“Mr. Drennan, would you please sit down,” Mr. Kimbrell said. “You had your opportunity to address this forum. And we’ve taken your comments into consideration. Now it’s time to move on.”

Mr. Drennan stood up and pointed at the board members. “All I can say, gentlemen, is your attitude, in my opinion, is very cavalier. It’s clear to me your decision tonight will very likely come back to bite you in the ass. The ladies, on the other hand, seem to appreciate the seriousness of the matter.”

Mr. Kimbrell glared at Mr. Drennan momentarily and then turned to me. “Young man, I hope you have more substantive things to share with this body than your English teacher does.”

I smiled weakly. I stood up and faced the front. I took a good look at the five adults behind the table. Beside Mr. Kimbrell was the alum with the Cermak jacket. He appeared to be Gary Lisowski. Then there was Mr. Payne, who was the principal, and two women, Sheila Munson and Linda Murphy. I recognized only the principal.

“Can you please tell us exactly what you saw under the bleachers that day?”

“I’ll try,” I said. I glanced over at Mr. Drennan. He was staring at the board members with his arms folded and his jaw locked. It didn’t look like I’d be getting any support from him. He was fighting his own battle at the moment. “Well, I was at the tennis courts that day to meet up with one of the players after practice.”

“And who would that be?” Mrs. Munson asked.

“Andie Walker? She’s on the tennis team.”

“Continue, please,” she said.

“Then I thought I heard voices coming from under where I was sitting. So I got up and went down there. I found two people under the bleachers—Carolyn Mancuso and Colton Brand.”

“What did you do or say when you found them?” the principal asked.

I stared at the floor sheepishly. “Well, I’m not proud to say that once I saw who was down there, I hid. I didn’t want to be seen.”

“And why was that?” Mrs. Murphy said.

“You see, Colton isn’t particularly fond of me right now. I didn’t want him to think I was spying on him.”

“That seems like exactly what you were doing,” Mr. Lisowski said.

“Gary, let the boy finish,” Mrs. Murphy said. She turned to me. “Go ahead, son.”

“It seemed pretty clear to me Colton wanted to mess around with Carolyn but she wasn’t interested.”

“What do you mean by messing around?” Mr. Lisowski asked.

“You know, sex stuff.”

“No, I don’t know,” he said.

“I think we know what was going on, Gary,” Mrs.
